COX ARBORETUM AND GARDENS
Over time the mission of the Cox Gardens and
Arboretum has evolved from one of general collecting to evaluation, selection
and display of a widely diverse group of plants from around the world that are
hardy in our Zone 7A climate. Currently this consist of over
3,000 plants. Through working with growers and offering tours to
the public, we are also looking to expand the plant palate in the Southeastern
U.S.
Approximately 4 acres of land is maintained in a
natural state and remains largely untouched. This area is dominated by a
mature southern hardwood forest consisting mainly of Oaks, Hickories, Popular,
Dogwoods and Sweetgum. In addition there are several streams, ponds and
numerous wetlands that have been left in a natural state. The goal of the
natural areas is to maintain and ultimately increase species diversity of both
flora and fauna
